Spencer kicked off her broadcasting journey between 1971 and 1972, working as a researcher for WCBS-TV in New York, which is part of the CBS family. She also took on roles as a writer and producer for public affairs programming at WKPC-TV in Louisville, Kentucky. From 1972 to 1977, she made her mark at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, another CBS affiliate, where she was both a reporter and co-anchor.

In 1977, Spencer transitioned to CBS News’ Washington bureau, earning a promotion to correspondent the very next year. Her career took a significant leap in 1986 when she became the medical correspondent for CBS News. Between 1987 and 1988, she anchored the CBS Sunday Night News and filled in as a substitute anchor before taking on the role of anchor for the Sunday edition of CBS Evening News from 1988 to 1989.
