Matt Frei, a friend, approached her with a tape recorder and soon convinced her to pursue a career as a journalist. Kay started her career as a Zimbabwe correspondent for the BBC World Service’s African division in 1990. She returned to London to work for the BBC World Service radio station before moving to Tokyo in 1992 and then Washington, D.C. in 1996 to work for BBC News television.
