Ron Bird KUTV 2News

Ron Bird has been a familiar face as an anchor and reporter on KUTV 2News’ morning and lunchtime shows since he joined the team back in August 1989. His journey in journalism kicked off in 1981 at KBCI in Boise, Idaho, and before making his way to 2News, he spent some time at the CBS affiliate in Fargo, North Dakota.

For an impressive 33 years, Bird has co-anchored both 2News This Morning and 2News At Noon. “I feel like the luckiest guy in the world to be living my dream at KUTV,” he shares. Growing up in the small town of Kimberly, Idaho, he recalls, “As a first-grader, I knew I wanted to be a news reporter and was laser-focused on that goal.” He fondly remembers dreaming of working at KUTV while watching the news on cable in Salt Lake City as a kid. After getting his start at an FM radio station and earning a communications degree from BYU, Ron launched his TV news career in Boise, Idaho, and then briefly in Fargo, North Dakota, before finally landing his dream job on the morning program at KUTV.

Throughout his time at KUTV, Ron has reported on many significant stories that have shaped Utah. He and his long-time co-anchor Mary Nickles were on the air when a tornado struck downtown Salt Lake City. On September 11, 2001, they provided all-day local coverage for KUTV. Then, in March 2020, while they were live on air, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake rattled Salt Lake City. They quickly shifted to continuous emergency coverage, earning an Emmy nomination for their efforts. “Being at the forefront of history and sharing it with our loyal viewers is incredible,” Ron says. “We take this honor and responsibility very seriously.”

Ron is not just interested in the big headlines; he also loves telling the stories of everyday people. His “Ron on the Run” feature highlights unsung heroes and events that may not get much attention but have a significant impact. He has covered everything from crime and elections to in-depth profiles of Utah’s modern pioneers. “One of my favorite experiences was flying in an F-16 with the Air Force Thunderbirds.”
