Schmidt worked at The Boston Globe in 2004. Schmidt started as a news clerk for The New York Times in 2005. He was promoted to staff reporter in December 2007, covering performance-enhancing drugs and legal issues in sports. Schmidt first reported in 2009 that David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez, and Sammy Sosa were among the approximately 100 players who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2003. Schmidt broke the story in 2010 about how baseball super-agent Scott Boras’ business gave a young prospect tens of thousands of dollars in loans, raising questions about whether Boras’ agency had broken laws designed to prevent players from being abused.
In 2011, Schmidt worked as a correspondent for The New York Times in Iraq. He discovered a collection of confidential documents in a Baghdad junkyard during his tenure in Iraq. Marines testified to the 2005 Haditha Massacre in the documents. The Marines killed 26 Iraqi civilians in that event. Other secret American documents were used to cook smoked carp by an Iraqi junkyard attendant. The story, which aired as American forces were leaving Iraq in 2011, received a lot of positive feedback. Schmidt was one of a group of reporters from the New York Times who broke a series of reports regarding the Justice Department charging FIFA executives in May 2015. When law enforcement agents detained the executives, Schmidt was in the lobby of a hotel in Switzerland.
Schmidt and Matt Apuzzo (co-written with Julia Preston) wrote a New York Times report in December 2015 criticizing the US government for missing critical evidence during the visa vetting process for Tashfeen Malik, who would later become one of the shooters in the 2015 San Bernardino massacre. The FBI director denounced the news as “garble,” and it found out that she had indicated her ideas on violent jihad in private chats rather than “talking freely on social media about her beliefs on violent jihad,” as the article claimed. Following these pieces by Schmidt and his coauthors, the public editor of the New York Times called for “structural adjustments” (both of which had relied on anonymous government sources).

Schmidt has been a lead correspondent for the New York Times on the federal and congressional investigations into ties between Donald Trump’s aides and Russians. Schmidt first reported on March 5, 2017, that FBI Director James Comey had asked the Justice Department to publicly contradict Trump’s assertions that President Obama had him wiretapped during the 2016 campaign.
