Whoopi Goldberg Career
She went to California in 1974 and lived in a variety of places, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. She improved her acting talents and established her talent as a stand-up comedian throughout this time.
Her first break came in a one-woman show as comedienne Mos Mabley. She received an award for it. She returned to New York shortly after and began training with Uta Hagen, an acting coach. ‘Citizen: I’m Not Losing My Mind, I’m Giving It Away,’ directed by William Farley, was her debut film appearance. ‘The Spook Show,’ a one-woman show she produced, starred in, and directed, premiered in 1983.
Following the popularity of ‘The Spook Show,’ she went on to develop several off-Broadway shows such as ‘Little Girl,’ about an African-American girl obsessed with having blond hair, and ‘Fontaine,’ about an addict with a doctorate in literature. Director Mike Nicholas was so pleased by her inventive presentation and sense of humor and flair in her shows that he volunteered to bring ‘The Spook Show’ to Broadway. The show, which ran for 156 performances, received widespread critical and commercial praise. She went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album as a result of it. The show’s astounding positive reception and eye-catching performance drew the attention of Hollywood’s top brass. It aided her in landing a role in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 picture ‘The Color Purple.’
‘The Color Purple’ was her big break, and it helped her launch her career in a significant manner. ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash,’ ‘Burglar,’ ‘Fatal Beauty,’ and ‘The Telephone’ were among the films that followed. Despite the fact that all of the films were moderately popular, none of them were as successful as her last attempt. ‘Clara’s Heart,’ released in 1988, and ‘Homer & Eddie,’ released in 1989, marked the conclusion of the 1980s decade for her. Both films received positive reviews from critics. Aside from films, she has also appeared on HBO Comic Relief episodes. She made her television debut with her flagship talk show, ‘The Whoopi Goldberg Show,’ in addition to acting in films. The show’s premise required her to conduct one-on-one interviews with political figures and Hollywood celebrities.
Aside from performing, she’s also dabbled in writing, co-writing a book called ‘Book’ with ghostwriter Daniel Paisner. It was made up of a number of stories, each with its own set of views and perspectives. Her involvement in the celebrity game shows Hollywood Squares in 1998 earned her two Emmy Awards in a row. She starred in various minor roles in films such as ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back,’ ‘Girl,’ ‘Interrupted,’ ‘Kingdom Come,’ and ‘Rat Race’ between 1998 and 2001. She has appeared in a number of television and film projects, including ‘The Magic Schoolbus,’ ‘Cinderella,’ ‘A Knight in Camelot,’ and ‘Call Me Claus.’ ’ She returned to Broadway in 2004 to star in a one-woman show with the same title.
In 2007, she rose to prominence as the moderator and co-host of the daytime talk show ‘The View.’ Though the show did not get off to as strong a start as Rosie O’Donnell’s, it quickly picked up and pushed past her. Meanwhile, Goldberg presented ‘Wake Up With Whoopi’, a nationally syndicated morning radio talk and entertainment program, from August 2006 until March 2008. She has reduced her acting in recent years and has become a vocal advocate for human rights. She recently appeared as Jane Marsh in the TV series ‘The Middle’ as a guest star.
