Blevins, an internet sensation, has truly transformed his skill and passion into a well-paying career, but only through a great deal of hard work, determination, grit, and, of course, talent. His large salary may appear surprising given that he earns it solely through video game streaming, but he has worked hard to become the most popular streamer on Amazon’s gaming platform Twitch, which explains the returns. It is surprising, however, to learn that Blevins does not promote professional gaming as a viable career path for every child! Blevins’ journey from ‘leisure’ to professional video game player has piqued my interest and admiration. Few people can say they turned their pastime or hobby into a career.
Blevins first competed in a Halo 3 event in Orlando in 2009, where he had limited success. He realized almost immediately that the road to victory would not be easy. To win money from tournaments, he had to outperform hundreds of thousands of other players. Blevins joined Luminosity Gaming in 2017 as a Halo player. Later, he moved on to Battlegrounds, where he won the PUBG Gamescom Invitational in the 3rd Person Squads category. By the time he began regularly streaming Fortnite, his viewership had skyrocketed, directly proportional to the game’s popularity. He had approximately 500,000 followers in September 2017, which had increased by 250 percent by March 2018. He also broke the Twitch. tv record for a single individual stream while playing Fortnite, after hosting a game with Drake, Travis Scott, and Juju Smith-Schuster. The following month, at his event Ninja Vegas 2018, he broke his own viewing record with an audience of 667,000 live viewers.
