MattyB Rapper – Career
Matthew Barrett hails from Western Australia and is a proud member of Perth’s Syllabolix Crew. Before diving headfirst into the music scene, he spent the 1990s riding the waves as a professional surfer. His passion for rap blossomed naturally; as a teenager, he often found himself freestyling at parties, but it wasn’t until Syllabolix formed in 1999 that he decided to take it seriously.
After a stint with Obese Records, Barrett took the leap to release music independently through his own label, B-Style Entertainment, starting in 2006. His first official track, “Courageous,” made its debut on the Culture of Kings compilation in 2000, co-written with fellow Syllabolix member Scott Griffiths, also known as Optamus.
Barrett has graced the stage at major events like the Margaret River Masters Concert in 2001 and the Big Day Out in 2002. That same year, he dropped his debut album, The Courageous LP, which he co-produced with Griffiths and Darren Reutens, aka Dazastah, another Syllabolix member. The album was well-received, with critics praising its genuine, down-to-earth portrayal of everyday life through the lens of Australian hip hop. One standout track, “Fridays (I Love ’Em),” even made it onto Super Request—Dog’s Breakfast, a compilation of popular songs voted by Triple J listeners.
After moving to the Gold Coast, Barrett released an eight-track EP titled Simple but Effective in May 2006 under his own label. Over the years, his songwriting process has transformed—from jotting down random lyrics to fully immersing himself in beats, developing themes and ideas, and then crafting lyrics that resonate with the music’s vibe.
In October 2014, he made a heartfelt return to the stage at the Rosemount Hotel for an All Stars performance following the Robert Hunter Cup, honoring his late friend Hunter.
