Maya Wiley Biography

Maya Wiley is an American civil rights activist, lawyer, and lecturer. She was the Civilian Complaint Review Board’s chairperson and served as counsel to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City hired Wiley as his legal counsel. From 2016 to 2017, she was the chair of the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB). From August 2018 to January 2021, she worked as a legal expert for MSNBC.

Wiley worked in the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Before being named counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014, she worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Open Society Institute. Wiley was de Blasio’s lawyer for two and a half years, during which time she became recognized for coining the term “agents of the city” to keep de Blasio’s interactions with lobbyists from being made public. She also developed and led the Center for Social Inclusion, a national policy strategy organization dedicated to structural racism’s elimination.

In 2013, Wiley was suggested as a possible NAACP president, but Cornell William Brooks was elected instead. Wiley has lectured at The New School and appeared on MSNBC as a political and legal pundit. In October 2020, Wiley launched her campaign for mayor of New York City in the 2021 election. As of mid-January 2021, she had raised about $720,000 from contributors, spent over $404,000 on her campaign, and had about $316,000 left.
