From 1982 through part of 1984, Berman presented The NFL on NBC Pregame Show, then known as NFL (insert year), until he was replaced by Bob Costas. In the early weeks of the 1988 NFL season, Berman hosted what was then known as NFL Live! while regular presenter Costas was heading NBC’s coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Berman hosted Super Bowl XVII in Pasadena. He also hosted NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week and co-hosted the 1984 World Series. Spanning the World is a popular monthly segment that Berman is in charge of. WNBC-newscasts TV’s and The Today Show ran the segment. A reel of weird and interesting sporting highlights from the previous month, with Don Pardo’s taped introduction and ending. When the segment starts, the sound of a rooster crowing splits the globe in half.
When the segment ends, the world returns to its “pre-torn” state. The announcer, Don Pardo, continues to use the same rooster sound “Keep an eye out for Spanning the World in the future. My name is Don Pardo.” In his last WNBC program, Berman stated that the topic would be continued on The Today Show. Berman would occasionally do a variation. On occasion, Berman did a version of the piece for WNBC called “Spanning the Week.” As a result, I’m going to go through some odd and interesting stories from the previous week. After a footage depicting an accident that may have resulted in damage, Berman’s slogan from the piece is “And nobody was hurt!”
