Jake Tapper is an American journalist, author, and cartoonist who currently works as a CNN anchor and top Washington reporter, hosting The Lead with Jake Tapper, a one-hour daily program that premiered in March 2013. In January of 2013, he joined the network. Since June 2015, he has presented CNN’s Sunday morning show, State of the Union.

Jake Tapper, a CNN anchor, and Washington correspondent joined the network in January 2013. Tapper presently hosts The Lead with Jake Tapper, a two-hour daily show that started in March 2013. Since June 2015, he has presented CNN’s Sunday morning show, State of the Union. He was named CNN’s lead anchor for Washington, D.C. events in April 2021. On State of the Union, Tapper shares his political knowledge by conducting interviews with top political and policymakers from around the world, covering Washington, the country, and the world. The Lead covers breaking news in politics and world events, as well as health, faith, politics, money, sports, and popular culture from around the country and the world.

Tapper most recently dedicated his political knowledge to CNN’s coverage of the 2020 election, playing a key role in the network’s extended coverage of the race, providing expert commentary on projections throughout the unusual week-long event. The New York Times called Tapper “tough and swift” and “a fierce defender of facts in the Trump era,” and praised him for sticking out for truth and decency in a nonpartisan fashion during a moment when both were in short supply in the US political world. For more than 20 years, Tapper has been a well-respected reporter in the nation’s capital. Several awards have been given to him for his coverage of the 2016 election, including the 2017 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism, the Los Angeles Times Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism, and the Los Angeles Times Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism.

In addition to his reporting, Tapper has also authored five books, including his debut novel The Hellfire Club, published in 2018, The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor, published in 2012, Down and Dirty: The Plot to Steal the Presidency, which was published in 2001, and Body Slam: The Jesse Ventura Story, which was published in 1999. The Outpost debuted in the top 10 on The New York Times bestseller list, and Tapper was one of the executive producers of the critically acclaimed film version of The Outpost, directed by Rod Lurie and released in 2020. The sequel to his novel, The Devil May Dance, will be released on May 11, 2021.

Tapper has worked hard to raise awareness and support for veterans’ causes. Since 2017, he has organized an annual celebrity eBay auction to raise funds for the top-rated organization Homes for Our Troops, which he works as an ambassador for, to build specially-designed mortgage-free houses for critically injured veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. During the 3rd Annual Vetty Awards, an annual award event presented by the Academy of United States Veterans, he received a People’s Choice Vetty in 2018. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society honored Tapper with the “Tex” McCrary Award for Excellence in Journalism in 2014 for his book and reporting on veterans and servicemen.

Tapper came to CNN from ABC News, where he was most recently a senior White House correspondent, a post he was appointed to soon after the 2008 presidential election and where he won the Merriman Smith Memorial Award for excellent deadline reporting an unprecedented three times. He also contributed to ABC News’ Emmy Award-winning coverage of President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration and its Murrow Award-winning coverage of Osama bin Laden’s death.

Tapper worked for Salon.com as a Washington correspondent, then as a national journalist, before joining ABC News. He began his career as a reporter at the Washington City Paper, and his work has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and The Weekly Standard. He has created caricatures and illustrations for the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, and from 1994 to 2003, his comic strip “Capitol Hell” appeared in Roll Call. In 2001, he hosted the CNN show Take 5, which featured young journalists discussing politics and pop culture on weekends.
