Homer was born into a poor family in Laurel, Mississippi, on the state’s southeastern border. He worked hard for his future through education, and he was able to attend college at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa as an engineering major. During his freshman year, he received a call to the ministry, which he accepted and enrolled at Mississippi College to continue his studies. He later enrolled at Wake Forest, North Carolina’s Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He was already a pastor serving in both North and South Carolina when he joined Second Baptist Houston Church in 1978.
He became a church leader, and the church’s attendance has since more than doubled to close to a thousand people. 5 times the initial numbers, that is from an average of 500 to more than 24,000 today. Homer was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention for the first time in June 1992. (SBC). He was re-elected to the position for the second time in June 1993. Pastor Edwin has a broadcast ministry called “The Winning Walk” through which he provides the content to more people around the world. This broadcast ministry distributes his sermons throughout North America and other parts of the world. However, all is not well. For example, in January 2010, Young’s “Healing Broken America” sermon series sparked controversy.
They sought a way to deal with the lessons that the Bible’s story of the Prodigal Sons could teach a broken Washington and a broken Wall Street. The sermons were thought to be political in nature. Homer is also a book author. In 2005, he wrote and published a book titled “Total Heart Health for Men Workbook,” from his personal experience after having suffered heart problems. He had an angioplasty for a clogged heart artery in 1988 and triple coronary bypass surgery in May 2010.
