He served as a representative of the Republican Party in the United States House of Representatives, representing New York’s 1st congressional district from 2015 to 2023. His district encompassed the eastern two-thirds of Suffolk County, including areas such as Smithtown, Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton, Shelter Island, and a portion of Islip. Prior to his role in the House of Representatives, Zeldin held the position of a member of the New York State Senate from the 3rd Senate district between 2011 and 2014.
During his time in office, Zeldin was known for his alignment with former President Donald Trump. He played a prominent role in defending Trump during the first impeachment hearings related to the Trump–Ukraine scandal. In April 2021, Zeldin announced his intention to run for the position of governor of New York in the 2022 elections. He secured the Republican Party and Conservative Party nominations by defeating three challengers in the primary. Although Zeldin received the highest percentage of the vote for a Republican gubernatorial nominee since 2002 and the highest raw vote total for a Republican gubernatorial nominee since 1970, he was ultimately defeated by incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul in the general election. Following his unsuccessful bid for governor, Zeldin contemplated running for the chair of the Republican National Committee in 2023. However, he ultimately decided against pursuing that campaign.
