As a political commentator, Maher hosted the late-night political show “Politically Incorrect” on Comedy Central from 1993 to 1997 and on ABC from 1997 to 2002. On the show, Maher began with a monologue before introducing four guests from various fields. They would then move on to discuss topics chosen by Maher, who was also a participant in the discussions. This talk show earned him an Emmy Award, a Genesis Award, two CableACE awards, and nominations for writing, producing, and hosting his show, “Politically Incorrect.” The show was cancelled in 2002. Bill has served on the board of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) as an animal rights advocate since 1997.
In 2003, he began hosting Real Time with Bill Maher, another political comedy show. Bill, in addition to hosting, is a co-writer and co-producer on the weekly hour-long talk show. Bill begins the show, as he does on Politically Incorrect, with a current events monologue before moving on to an interview with a guest. He also invites panelists into the studio, with whom they discuss events from the previous week. Real Time, like his previous show, has earned Maher more recognition, with nominations for Writers Guild Awards and Primetime Emmy Awards.
