She was on the air when Osama bin Laden died, and word of an earthquake — and likely tsunami — in Japan broke during her broadcast, resulting in numerous hours of live coverage as the disaster unfolded.
She most recently hosted the network’s coverage of the 12 boys and their coach trapped in a cave in Thailand and the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, where she interviewed student survivors who demanded an end to gun violence in America. She also reported on Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano disaster, US President Donald Trump’s Singapore conference with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Syria’s tragic chemical assault in Douma, and Europe’s migrant issue. She spoke with high-profile Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim shortly after he was pardoned and released from prison by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad; former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd during the Trump-Kim summit, and author Bill Browder about the threats he believes Vladimir Putin poses to the world.
Church and her colleagues Nick Paton Walsh and Phil Black received the prestigious Golden Nymph award for Best 24 Hour News Programme at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in 2014 for their coverage of unrest in Ukraine, which included a fatal shooting in Kyiv’s Independence Square during anti-government protests. For the same coverage, they won the Best Short News Report category at the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) awards.
She also helped CNN win the Edward R. Murrow Award for their coverage of the Israel-Hezbollah War in 2006. Church worked for Australia Television (ATV), Australia’s first worldwide satellite news service, for five years before joining CNN. She also filed articles for ATV and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) Foreign Correspondent program when she traveled to Asia. Church won the New York Festival’s TV programming award for coverage of the Hong Kong Olympics while at ATV.
