Barton founded Expedia, Inc., an online travel company (and Microsoft spinoff), Zillow, an online real estate company, and Glassdoor, a job search engine and career community. He also founded Trover, online travel photography sharing website and app acquired by Expedia in 2016. Barton was also a Benchmark Venture Partner and serves on the boards of directors for Netflix, Avvo, Nextdoor, and Artsy.

Expedia was founded by Barton within Microsoft in 1994. In 1994, Microsoft planned to release a travel manual on CD-ROM. Barton, who was used to the text-based internet services available at the time, discovered a Prodigy-hosted website intended for home-based travel agencies. Nathan Myhrvold, Steve Ballmer, and Bill Gates were among those to whom he pitched the idea of an online travel agency. Barton received approval from Gates, Balmer, and Myhrvold to move forward with the initiative, which debuted online in 1996 as Expedia. After Expedia went public in 1999, Barton served as CEO until 2003, when the company was sold for $3.6 billion.
After taking a year off from the corporate world to spend time in Italy, Barton returned to Seattle in 2004 and began working on Zillow with Lloyd Frink, another Expedia and Microsoft graduate. Prior to the company’s debut, Barton and Frink revealed little about it. According to MIT Technology Review, he was one of the top ten innovators under 35 in 2003.
