Jeremy Bowen kicked off his journey with the BBC back in 1984, diving headfirst into the world of war journalism, starting in El Salvador in 1989. Over the years, he’s reported from over 70 countries, with a significant focus on the Middle East and the Balkans. During the Bosnian War, he was on the ground in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and in 1999, while covering the conflict in Kosovo, he faced a terrifying moment when bandits robbed him at gunpoint.

One of the most harrowing experiences came when he was documenting the Israeli Defense Forces’ withdrawal from Lebanon; his car was struck by tank fire from the IDF, tragically killing his driver and “fixer.” Although Bowen and his cameraman managed to escape, he was left grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder, which led him to step back from the front lines and take on a role as a presenter in the studio. From 2000 to 2002, he hosted the daily news and entertainment morning show, Breakfast with Sophie Raworth.

Bowen also made appearances as a guest host on the satirical panel show Have I Got News for You and presented a three-part series for the BBC called Son of God in 2001, exploring the life of Jesus. In 2002, he followed up with a similar documentary about Moses. Interestingly, he turned down the chance to cover the 2003 invasion of Iraq from Baghdad, a city he was quite familiar with. However, he returned to the field in March 2003 as a special correspondent, where he reported on the death of Pope John Paul II. Fast forward to April 2009, the BBC Trust’s Editorial Standards Committee released a report addressing three complaints, one of which came from the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, concerning two news items featuring Bowen. These complaints included 24 allegations of breaching BBC guidelines on accuracy and impartiality, with three being fully or partially upheld.

The BBC Trust’s findings were based on reports about Har Homa in the 1960s, the Six-Day War’s impact on the Middle East, and the war’s aftermath. Bowen has publicly criticized the censure, arguing that it stems from a “campaign group” of “enemies of impartiality.” Additionally, the committee acknowledged Bowen’s assertion that the information was indeed accurate.
