When the US re-established diplomatic relations with Cuba, he helped lead WPLG’s coverage, traveling to the island to cover Pope Francis’ and President Obama’s visits. In 2016, Oquendo followed Hurricane Matthew as it made its way up the East Coast, providing compelling live updates as well as powerful interviews with families whose homes were destroyed by the storm.
While reporting on the World Cup in Brazil, he spoke with locals from the hillsides who expressed their displeasure that the cash-strapped country was squandering its funds to host the tournament and the Olympics. Oquendo began his career in sports broadcasting as a weekend sports anchor. He was in charge of all professional and college sports in South Florida, reporting on the Miami Heat during the LeBron James era, including trips to the NBA Finals in 2010, 2011, and 2013. He also performed a feature article on Miami Heat forward Chris Anderson, interviewing Anderson’s estranged mother at his boyhood home and showing a side of the guy few had seen before.
