Doane began his journalism career at WNYW, working as a field producer. He later joined Channel One News, where he served as a news anchor. In that role, he was deployed internationally to report from countries including El Salvador, Indonesia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Sudan, gaining early experience in global field reporting.
In April 2006, CNN hired Doane as a special video news correspondent for South Asia, including India. Based in New Delhi, he covered regional developments until mid-2007.

In March 2020, Doane tested positive for COVID-19 during the early stages of the global pandemic.
