Holmes made his debut with CNN International in 1996 as the network’s first Australian anchor. Since then, he has reported from over 80 countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas. Throughout his career, he has covered significant conflicts in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Gaza, and the West Bank, providing in-depth on-the-ground reporting during the Iraq War, including its insurgency, occupation, and the trial and execution of Saddam Hussein.

In January 2004, Holmes found himself in a harrowing situation when a CNN convoy he was part of was ambushed outside Baghdad, resulting in the tragic deaths of two colleagues and injuries to another.
