She worked as a business news correspondent and anchor for The Wall Street Journal Report, World Market Outlook, and Business USA at Wall Street Journal Television from 1991 to 1996. She became an anchor and reporter for WBIS-TV, short-lived sports and business channel in New York, in 1996.
Following that, MacCallum worked for NBC/CNBC as a reporter/anchor. Before being assigned to co-anchor CNBC’s Morning Call with MacCallum and Ted David, she frequently contributed to The News with Brian Williams, Today, NBC affiliate news programs, and CNBC World. She also appeared on Checkpoint, a late-night program that focused on homeland security and the War on Terror. On Fox News Channel, MacCallum hosted a new show called The First 100 Days, which premiered on January 9, 2017. After Megyn Kelly’s departure, it was developed as a replacement for Tucker Carlson Tonight, which relocated to the time slot originally occupied by The Kelly File. The show was renamed The Story with Martha on April 28, 2017. By the end of 2020, upstart Newsmax had soared in the ratings, while MacCallum and Fox had plummeted. On January 11, her show “The Story” was downgraded from the premier 7 p.m. ET time slot to the 3 p.m. ET time slot.
