In 1985, he joined the BBC as a staff reporter for BBC Radio Leicester, and in 1988, he joined Midlands Today as a TV presenter. He returned to Radio Leicester as News Editor in January 1989. In 1991, he moved to Manchester to work for Radio Five, a newly established station, where he hosted the nightly magazine show Five Aside. He began his career with Five Live in 1994 as a newsreader and reporter, quickly rising through the ranks to become a regular presenter on Weekend Breakfast before co-hosting Five Live Breakfast with Victoria Derbyshire.
