Dan began his career in television news while still an undergraduate at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1995. His internship led to his first job as a morning anchor and noon weatherman in journalism. He went on to work for the news in Mankato, Minnesota, Yuma, and finally Tucson. He also worked for the Bureau of Land Management as a wildland firefighter for four summers while college. Dan is quite active in our neighborhood. He founded the Casas Adobes Optimist Club and served as its first president. For numerous years, that club has adopted up to 30 less fortunate families throughout the Christmas season, ensuring that the children have gifts under the tree and food on the table.

Dan is also a founding board member of the Greater Tucson Fire Foundation, which helps our local fire department with cash, tools, technology, advanced training, equipment, survivor assistance, and educational campaigns. He volunteers every year during Love of Reading Week, spending time with children and imparting in them the importance of education. He also comes to see me on a regular basis. He also visits the Southern Arizona VA Medical Center on a regular basis to honor veterans for their service. For the past 11 years, he has been the official announcer for the Tucson Veteran’s Day Parade and the Tucson Rodeo Parade telecast. His schedule is jam-packed with emceeing and attending dozens of fundraising events.

Dan has won numerous journalism awards, including two Emmys for a half-hour documentary he shot, wrote, and produced during one of his three trips to Vietnam with local veterans. He received a Communicator’s Award for a rodeo story about legendary Ty Murray and Ty’s efforts to provide a home for retired bucking horses. He’s also been recognized by the Arizona Associated Press on several occasions. Every year, he volunteers during Love of Reading Week, spending time with children and instilling the value of education in them. He also pays frequent visits.
