His brother’s illness had such an emotional impact on him that he enrolled at the University of Iowa in 1996 to major in biochemical engineering in order to find a cure for his brother’s condition. During his university days, a model scout approached him about competing in the ‘Fresh Faces of Iowa’ modeling competition. He won the competition and therefore dropped out of college. His participation in modeling competitions and exposure at IMTA led to modeling opportunities in Paris and Milan. He signed with Next and began modeling for Calvin Klein in 1998. He relocated to Los Angeles and was cast as Michael Kelso in his first television series, ‘That ’70s Show,’ which he successfully completed until 2006. He also started auditioning for films.
He rose to prominence as a comedian. He appeared in several comedies, including ‘Dude, Where’s My Car?,’ ‘Just Married,’ and ‘Guess Who.’ These films were released one after the other after the year 2000.
