Swraj Paul was a remarkable Indian-born British business tycoon and philanthropist who made significant contributions to both industry and public life in the UK. In 1996, he was honored with a life peerage and became a non-affiliated member of the House of Lords, taking on the title Baron Paul of Marylebone in the City of Westminster.

This milestone occurred during John Major’s time as Prime Minister. He later took on important roles in Parliament, including serving as Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords starting in December 2008. In October 2009, he was also appointed to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. Sadly, Lord Paul passed away in London on August 21, 2025, at the age of 94.

In 1966, he came to the United Kingdom to seek treatment for his little daughter, who had been afflicted with leukemia. He waited a year after her death to create Natural Gas Tubes. He started with one steel unit and slowly built up his collection. He created the Caparo Group in 1968, and it has since grown to become one of the UK’s major steel conversion and distribution firms, manufacturing structural steels, precision tube, spirally welded tube, unique bar grades, industrial wires, cold-rolled strips, and spring steel strip. Lord Paul stepped down as chairman of the Caparo Group in 1996.

Caparo employed around 10,000 workers in North America, Europe, India, and the Middle East until Autumn 2015. 16 of the 20 limited businesses that made up the majority of Caparo Group UK went into administration in October 2015, and his son Angad Paul, the Group’s CEO, died in an apparent suicide from his eighth-floor penthouse flat on November 8, 2015. Paul was sworn into the Privy Council in October 2009 as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords and a former chairman of the London 2012 Olympic Delivery Committee (LDCC). He is the first person of Indian descent to assume the position of deputy speaker. Lord Paul was the highest fundraiser to Gordon Brown’s leadership campaign, donating £500,000 to the Labour Party.
